The Centre for Reconciliation joined the Ukrainian community, civic leaders and guests in a message of unity, solidarity and peace.

The Centre for Reconciliation (TCfR) was honoured to join members of the Ukrainian community and civic leaders at a Ukrainian Independence Day event held at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln on Saturday, 22 August 2026.

Organised by the Ukrainian Cultural Centre Lincoln, the event brought people together to commemorate the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people and celebrate Ukrainian identity, culture and heritage through traditional music and dance.

Among the civic and community guests were Professor M. A. Robinson, Deputy Lieutenant; retired Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Graydon, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Bomber Command Centre; the Mayor of Lincoln, Cllr Clare Smalley; the Sheriff of Lincoln; and representatives from communities and organisations across Lincoln.

Throughout the event, messages from civic guests echoed a common and powerful theme: unity, solidarity and peace, together with continued support for the people of Ukraine.
A Personal Story of Welcome and Solidarity
The event also provided an opportunity to hear personal stories of friendship and solidarity.

John Hinman, who hosted Halyna Wolverson and her daughter Eva from Ukraine, shared his experience and reflected on welcoming and supporting them following their arrival in the UK.

His story was a reminder that solidarity is demonstrated not only through words, but through friendship, hospitality and practical acts of welcome.

Subash Chellaiah, Founder and Executive Director of The Centre for Reconciliation, said:
“It was a privilege for The Centre for Reconciliation to be present and to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian community. Saturday’s gathering was both a celebration of Ukrainian identity and culture and a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people.
“The messages of unity, solidarity and peace shared throughout the event are values at the heart of reconciliation. We continue to stand alongside our Ukrainian friends in the hope for peace, justice and reconciliation.”

TCfR particularly acknowledges Irene Astbury, Chairperson of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre Lincoln, for her leadership and commitment in bringing the event together and for her continuing work supporting and strengthening the Ukrainian community in Lincoln.

The Centre for Reconciliation extends its sincere thanks to Irene, the Ukrainian Cultural Centre Lincoln team, the International Bomber Command Centre and everyone who contributed to a meaningful afternoon of remembrance, culture, friendship and solidarity.
