The Centre for Reconciliation (TCfR) is marking Black History Month this October by highlighting the contribution of Lincolnshire Ghana Union (LGU) to cultural understanding, inclusion and community life.

LGU brings together people of Ghanaian heritage who live, work or study in Lincolnshire, alongside people from other communities. Through cultural and social activities, the group promotes unity, education and opportunities for people of all ages to connect.

Paulina Oppong-Peprah, Founder and General Secretary of Lincolnshire Ghana Union, said:
“LGU gives members a sense of belonging, and a family for people who have migrated to live and work in Lincolnshire.”

The group helps members explore Ghanaian culture and values alongside British culture and values, strengthening understanding between generations and across communities. It also creates spaces for friendship, learning and projects that support health and wellbeing for people from all backgrounds.

With support from The Centre for Reconciliation (TCfR) and Lincolnshire Council for Voluntary Youth Services (LCVYS), LGU organised a youth programme in African arts, crafts and culture, providing opportunities for young participants to learn about and celebrate cultural heritage.

Black History Month provides an opportunity to recognise this work and the contributions of Black communities to Lincolnshire. It also encourages wider conversations about identity, belonging and how communities can work together to challenge prejudice and build mutual respect.

LGU aims to develop a vibrant and inclusive community that is proud of its diversity, strengthening cultural links with other community groups in Lincoln and surrounding areas.
TCfR’s support for LGU reflects its commitment to reconciliation, dignity and inclusion, bringing people together across differences of faith, belief and culture.

This October, TCfR encourages local organisations and residents to recognise the experiences, heritage and achievements of Black communities, and to strengthen connections that continue throughout the year.
