Holy Cross Church and Rev Steve Holt, along with TCfR, were delighted to welcome members of the Malayali community into the hall for their Onam Festival on Sunday, 21st August.
Onam is Kerala’s annual harvest festival, rooted in Hindu mythology and celebrating the legendary King Mahabali, whose reign is remembered as a golden age of prosperity, equality, and peace. While it began as a Hindu festival, over time it has become a cultural celebration for all people of Kerala — Hindus, Christians, and Muslims alike — and is today a symbol of unity and shared heritage.
Traditionally, Onam spans ten days of festivities in Kerala, with floral decorations, traditional dances, music, games, and the grand vegetarian feast known as Onam Sadhya. It reflects both the region’s agrarian traditions and the spirit of togetherness that binds communities.
Here in Lincoln, the Malayali community organised a vibrant post-Onam celebration at Holy Cross Hall, thanks to the invitation from Aneesh. It was a joy to witness the traditions being carried forward — children enjoying themselves, families gathering together, and everyone sharing in the warmth of the occasion. The highlight of the day was the delicious Onam Sadhya, lovingly prepared and served, capturing the true essence of abundance and gratitude.
Though far from Kerala, the spirit of Onam was alive and thriving in Lincoln — a wonderful reminder that festivals are not just about rituals, but about community, joy, and belonging.
